DUTCH ELM DISEASE is a vascular wilt disease of elm trees.  

Prevention is possible with fungicide injections.  This is discussed on the FUNGAL DISEASE INJECTION page.

Even large elm trees that have avoided infection for 50 to 100 years should not be considered resistant or immune to the disease.

Valuable elms should be treated if they are valuable to your landscape.
